Arrange windows across multiple Mac monitors

Use a separate grid for each connected display and arrange windows within the space available on that monitor.

Choose the display for a window

  1. Focus the window you want to move.
  2. Open Tidy Screen with Control + Option + Command + T or its menu bar icon.
  3. Find the grid labeled with the destination display’s name.
  4. Select a rectangle on that grid to move and resize the window on that display.

With more than one grid open, press Tab to switch between display grids. Shift + Tab moves in the other direction. You can drag a grid panel by its title area if it covers something you need to see.

Move to the next display

When more than one display is connected, the grid includes a Move window to next display control. It scales the window’s placement proportionally to the next display’s usable area, which is useful when the monitors have different sizes.

Repeat a layout shortcut to cycle displays

Enable Repeat a shortcut to cycle through displays in Settings → General. Apply a saved layout with its shortcut, then repeat the shortcut to place that layout on the next display. If the app enforces a minimum size and cannot reach the requested layout, cycling may not advance as expected.

See setting up global shortcuts for assigning keys to layouts.

Leave room for the menu bar and Dock

Tidy Screen uses the display’s available desktop area, accounting for the menu bar and Dock. Grid sizes, margins, and gaps are controlled in Settings → Grid & Spacing. The same layout proportions adapt to each display’s usable space.

If a window won’t move between displays

Exit macOS full-screen mode before applying a layout. A fixed-size dialog or an app’s minimum dimensions can limit placement. If no windows move, check Accessibility permission. For a straightforward test, focus a normal Finder window and choose a half-screen region on the destination display.

To arrange several windows on one display, follow the side-by-side and quarter-screen guide.
